President Shimon Peres spoke Monday at a ceremony marking 65 years since the murder of Haviva Reik, a Jewish parachutist who went behind enemy lines during World War II to fight the Nazis.

"When the whole world went crazy, and even enlightened nations who fought Nazi Germany, closed their doors, as well as their ears from listening and eyes from seeing the Holocaust of the Jewish people, then I'm sorry to conclude that, the strategic prerogative of the Jews is ultimately only in our own hands. Other people can make mistakes and stay alive. Our people are not allowed to make strategic mistakes," Peres said.
