A spokesman for German chancellor Angela Merkel issued a statement on Monday, criticizing the decision to approve the building of 900 housing units in the southern Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo. Ulrich Wilhelm told reporters, "We regret the latest decision to approve construction of new houses in East Jerusalem."

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit Merkel in Berlin next week.
