In regards to separate conversations Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Syrian President Bashar Assad had with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris, Assad’s political advisor Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban has announced that a return of the Golan Heights to Syria must be the starting point for negotiations with Israel.

According to Dr. Shaaban, Netanyahu expressed to Sarkozy a willingness to enter into negotiations with Syria without preconditions but that Assad had told his French counterpart that this would be “unacceptable” as Syria demands a return of the Golan as a prerequisite for negotiations between the two Middle Eastern countries.
