Kadima Knesset Member Meir Sheetrit, who was Interior Minister in the Olmert government, came out swinging against the Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Wednesday morning, accusing him of looking for a confrontation with the United States as well as with the Palestinian Authority.
He told Voice of Israel government radio that refusing U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell’s request for a freeze on building in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo will damage relations with the Obama government as well with as the Fatah-run Palestinian Authority. Ignoring the interviewer’s comment that the PA apparently will not hold elections that are scheduled for January, MK Sheetrit argued that the new construction will play into the hands of Hamas and boost popularity for the terrorist organization.
