Law Will Provide Free Legal Aid for Poor Israelis

The Knesset Constitution Committee has approved for its second and third reading a law that will bring free legal aid to Israeli courts for poor defendants. The responsibility for providing free legal aid will fall on the Israeli Bar Organization, which licenses attorneys in Israel. The Bar Association will require all law firms to donate time to representing poor defendants voluntarily.

The law is the result of cooperation between Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin and MK Yariv Levin, both Likud, and the head of the Israel Bar, Yuri Guy-Ron.
