A report in a Kuwaiti newspaper over the weekend said that a senior Syrian official assisted Israel in assassinating top Hizbullah terrorist Imad Mughniyah, who was killed in Damascus last year. The report quotes a Western diplomat in Damascus as saying that a Syrian customs official allowed Israeli agents into Syria for a large sum of money. The agent reportedly received a million dollars for his efforts in opening the border to "smugglers," whom he apparently thought were from Iraq. It is not clear if he realized that the people who bribed him were Israeli or not.
Israel has denied any connection to the Mughniyah assassination.
