New Law Would Suspend Drivers' Licenses Automatically

A new law proposed by MK Ofir Pines would put a stop to the phenomenon of Israelis whose licenses have been suspended continuing to legally drive, because they were not officially informed of the authorities' decision to pull their licenses. Currently, drivers are required to surrender their licenses when they receive a notification that their licenses have been suspended – and according to Pines, about 30% of those whose licenses are suspended do not file them with the Transport Ministry as required, ignoring the registered letters sent to them demanding their licenses.

Under the new law, which passed its first Knesset reading Tuesday, licenses could be suspended even if the driver did not receive a notification. "Hundreds of dangerous drivers laugh at the law, using all sorts of tricks and excuses. This law will prevent them from fooling the authorities and endangering us all," Pines said.
