French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner has openly expressed regret over Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's decision not to seek reelection. Abbas's resignation is “a threat to peace,” he stated.

United States officials praised Abbas, but did not state an opinion on his decision to step down. Spokesman Robert Gibbs said the Obama administration will “look forward to continuing to work with [Abbas]” toward Israel-PA peace.
