Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Thursday night that he hopes efforts to renew talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) won't be hurt by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's announcement, earlier in the evening, that he is not running for re-election.

Barak said a peace deal is important to Israel's security and the future of the region, and said it was important that both sides adhered to the principle of negotiating an agreement.
