An uproar was caused last week when Intelligence Minister Dan Meridor filed an appeal against applying Israel's continuity law to a measure requiring a vote of the public on any deal that would return the Golan Heights to Syria. The law would allow the Knesset to proceed on a referendum measure from the point where it had progressed in the last Knesset. Meridor said a vote against a treaty involving return of the Golan would lessen the international perception of Israel.
Over the weekend, Professor Avi Diskin of the Hebrew University told Arutz Sheva that he finds it “absurd” that opponents of a national referendum bill have argued that national referenda are undemocratic.
