Kadima plans to propose a law that would split the job of the Attorney General into two parts – creating a second, independent authority whose main job would be to investigate government corruption. The proposal mirrors one by Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman, but would somewhat limit the powers given to the holder of the new post.
While Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has said that he believes that the current situation – where a government official investigates his or her bosses for corruption – needs to be changed, he believes that the law should not be enacted until it is weighed carefully. Kadima's proposal, which the Knesset will discuss Sunday, is seen as a tactic to force Netanyahu to make a quicker decision, and the party believes it will be supported by coalition and opposition Mks.
