Rabbanit Yehudit Shilat, manager of the Takana Forum, which deals in proper behavior between the sexes, said Thursday that girls don't have any reason to join the army, but that those who claim they don't want to serve on religious grounds must have a legitimate case.
Rabbanit Shilat was interviewed by Arutz Sheva's Hebrew service in the wake of a Knesset decision to delay voting for a month on a bill that would require girls of military age who wanted an exemption based on religion to produce written proof that they had studied in a religious institution. The bill was proposed in the wake of such exemptions being granted to girls who are not religious. The rabbanit said the practice must denounced as a profanation of G-d's name and that such a law is therefore necessary.
She added that because of the lack of clear borders, relations between soldiers of the different sexes are not always modest or otherwise appropriate. She said girls can contribute to the defense of the country in many other ways without serving in the Israel Defense Forces.
