Southern district farmer Shai Dromi will serve five months' community service to fulfill a plea bargain accepted on Tuesday in the Be'er Sheva District Court in connection with a charge of illegal possession of weapons.

The conviction and sentence follow his acquittal three months ago on charges of manslaughter after he shot and mortally wounded a Bedouin thief who broke into his farm in 2007, killing his dog and attempting to steal his livestock. The case made headlines in Israel for months and led to legislation that protects the rights of homeowners to defend themselves against intruders.
