Science and Technology Minister Daniel Hershkowitz announced Thursday night that agreement had been reached with the Prime Minister's Office to allow the transfer of 45 million shekels to the budget of the National Service (Sherut Leumi in Hebrew) alternative to military service. Hershkowitz says the transfer was made through an agreement with Eyal Gabbai of the Prime Minister"s Office. Gabbai later denied that there was an agreement.
Four organizations using National Service volunteers have threatened to go on strike next week over lack of funding. If confirmed, the transfer will negate the National Service's portion of across-the-board cuts recently announced to pay for swine-flu vaccine and defense needs not originally covered in the 2009-2010 budget.
