Pope Benedict XVI will pay his first visit to Rome's main synagogue in January, Vatican officials announced Tuesday. The visit will make Benedict the second pope in history to visit the synagogue, after a visit there by Pope John-Paul II in 1986.

Relations between the Vatican and the Jewish community have been rocky since last year, when Benedict welcomed back to the Church Holocaust denier Bishop Richard Williamson.
