Austrians turned out in large numbers on Sunday to pay their respects on the first anniversary of the death of Joerg Haider, former governor of the province of Carinthia. Haider's statements of admiration for the Nazis led a number of European Union countries to impose diplomatic sanctions on his country.
Israel threatened to withdraw its ambassador when his party rose to power.
While Haider had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood when he was killed in a traffic accident, some Austrians blame Israel for his death.
On Friday, a special exhibit dedicated to Haider was opened at a museum in Klagenfurt, inside the personal air-raid shelter of former World War II death camp commandant Friedrich Rainer. The exhibit will eventually be devoted entirely to Haider.
