Tourism Minister: Tourist Site Police Force Needed

On a tour of the vandalized Ovdat national park Sunday, Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov said that Israel needed to establish a special police unit that would ensure the safety of tourist and archaeological sites. Misezhnikov was visiting the site in order to determine what steps needed to be taken in order to repair the damage from the vandalism committed last week, apparently by neighboring Bedouin, according to police, and how much it would cost to fix.

"We must build a national plan that will ensure the welfare of the 70-some main tourist sites in Israel, which are a historical, cultural, and religious legacy of the Jewish people," Misezhnikov said, adding that he wanted the new force to have full enforcement capabilities, including being able to arrest and detain suspects.
