Initial Arab Reaction to Obama Peace Prize Mixed

Immediate Arab reaction was mixed to Friday's announcement of United States President Barack Obama winning the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

Senior negotiator Saeb Erekat of the Palestinian Authority (PA) said he hoped Obama would succeed in bringing peace to the Middle East, including a withdrawal by Israel to the 1967 borders and establishment of a PA state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Spokesman Khaled Al-Batash of Islamic Jihad in Gaza called the prize political and said it had nothing to do with merit, values or morals. He asked why the American president should get the prize when his country has the largest nuclear arsenal and "continues to spill innocent blood in Iraq and Afghanistan.
