Anti-Defamation League director Abe Foxman is alarmed over spreading conspiracy theories that place Israel as being behind the ouster of Honduras president Manuel Zelaya. The rumors include allegations that Israeli soldiers aided in the overthrow and supplied tear gas to President Robert Micheletti to force Zelaya out of the Brazilian embassy, where he had taken refuge.
The interim government has denied the charges, and Foxman said, "We know from history that at times of turmoil and unrest, Jews are a convenient scapegoat. That is happening now in Honduras, a country that has only a small Jewish minority." Less than 100 Jewish families live in the country, which has a population of 8 million people.
