Sarkozy: Time to Act Against Iran's Nuclear Progam

French President Nicolas Sarkozy told the United Nations' Security Council on Thursday that immediate steps must be taken against Iran's nuclear program. Speaking at a session in which the council adopted a United States proposal to work against nuclear proliferation, Sarkozy said, "Talk about a future world without nuclear weapons is nice, yet we have two immediate nuclear crises."

Sarkozy noted that the international community has called for dialogue with Iran since 2005. He continued, "Since then, there's only uranium enrichment, more centrifuges and a call by the leader of Iran to wipe a U.N. member nation [Israel] off the map. What are we going to do about it?"

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown told body that the world should consider "far tougher sanctions" against the Tehran government if it continues to seek an atomic bomb.
