Syrian President Bashar Assad arrived in Saudi Arabia Wednesday night on a surprise visit. He participated in the opening of a new Saudi university dedicated to science and technology in the city of Jeddah.
The visit was considered an important one by Arab commentators, as Syria and Saudi Arabia have been at odds for years. The Saudis are considered to be the prime backers of the anti-Syrian forces in Lebanon.
