The IDF plans to open the Gilboa checkpoint near Jenin to hundreds of Palestinian Authority vehicles, allowing PA merchants into the Gilboa area to conduct business. Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced the move Tuesday, saying that it was designed to increase economic activity and better the lives of PA Arabs and Israelis.
Speaking to reporters, Barak said that the IDF would allow some 400 to 500 vehicles, cars and trucks to pass through the checkpoint each day beginning in several weeks. Barak said that the move was evidence of the growing economic ties between Israel and the PA, and he praised PA Prime Minister Salam Fayad for his work in improving the PA economy.
