Shivtei Yisrael (Tribes of Israel) Street, which runs between the Jerusalem municipality and the city's Highway One, was closed to traffic Sunday evening, after hareidi-religious demonstrators set fire to the contents of a number of dumpsters in the area.
Police believe the demonstrators were protesting the arrest of 11 youngsters who were involved in weekend protests over the city's operation of the Carta parking lot on Shabbat and welfare-department involvement in the police investigation into the case of a hareidi woman accused of starving her three-year-old son. Earlier, the Jerusalem District Court had announced the one-day extension of the custody of 16 demonstrators who had been arrested on Friday night and Saturday.
