Police are investigating the Thursday night rock attack on Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitz of the Western Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem and other Holy Places. The rabbi was attacked by hareidi religious demonstrators as he left the Jerusalem home of Rabbi Shalom Yosef Elyashiv. He was unharmed, although his car was damaged.

Rabbi Rabinovitz has been criticized in hareidi circles on claims he has contributed to incidents at the Western Wall Plaza and the grave of Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yochai (Rashbi) in Meron and mixing of the sexes at those sites. They have also accused him of cooperating with secular Zionists.

Rabinovitz has been trying to work out understandings between rival Chassidic groups at the Rashbi site. Recently he arranged for renovations at the complex and tried to bring it into the Holy Sites Authority.
