Sephardic Chief Rabbi, Shlomo Amar, is calling on the public to fast next Wednesday, Rosh Hodesh Elul, in order to check the quickly spreading swine flu in Israel. Former Chief Rabbi and Shas Party spiritual leader, Ovadia Yosef, has joined the call, as have additional rabbis.
Meanwhile, a new report from the Health Ministry reveals that the virus is quickly spreading. 3,000 Israelis were suspected of contracting the H1N1 virus last week, as compared to just under 2,000 in the last week of July, and just under 1,000 the week before that. On Thursday two more Israelis died of the virus, including a woman who had cancer. This brings total fatalities in Israel to seven people.
