Opposition leader Tzipi Livni slammed Shas and its chairman Eli Yishai Wednesday, claiming he was promoting corruption by asking for a presidential pardon of former party colleague Shlomo Benizri. The statements place Livni on dangerous ground as several of her own party colleagues have been indicted or are under investigation for corruption, including former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, former Finance Minister Avraham Herschzon and Kadima MK Tzachi Hanegbi.
Politcal observers said that attacks against Shas are part of an overall trend. Livni has placed herself squarely in the secular camp since assuming leadership of her party. She has made several public statements in support of the Homosexual community and did some of her electioneering in Tel Aviv bars.
