The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment announced on Tuesday that about 100 laid-off workers will undergo professional training by the end of next year to enter the diamond industry. The ministry will subsidize a half-year course in diamond polishing, which is slated to start in November.

Industry leaders say the training will help fill a need for polishers that will increase production by hundreds of millions of dollars and may open up additional industrial activity. They say more help is needed, in the form of credit, to help the industry, which has been hard hit by the global financial crunch.
