IDF Officer Searches for Tunnel Detectors in US

A lone IDF officer has been tasked with the mission of finding technology capable of detecting smuggler tunnels, regardless of their depth or sophistication. The officer, who remains nameless other than by a pseudonyn "Captain Asher," will be sent to the United States next month to research the issue.

A member of the IDF Ground Forces Command's Technology and Logistics Department, "Captain Asher" will work on the problem together with a firm that specializes in hunting for underground oil reserves. Much of the IDF's focus is aimed at locating and destroying the tunnels through which terrorists, arms and ammunition are brought into Israel from Gaza, and into Gaza from Egypt. The terrorists use such tunnels to kidnap IDF soldiers during attacks, such as the one in which IDF soldier Gilad Shalit was abducted and spirited away into Gaza three years ago. Shalit's whereabouts and condition are still unknown.
