      UNIFIL Inspectors Attacked in Lebanon

In southern Lebanon, 14 United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) inspectors were injured Saturday after they were attacked by residents of the village of Khirbet Selm, 12 miles north of the Lebanese-Israeli border. The inspectors came to the village to investigate the circumstances of an explosion of an ammunition depot, most likely belonging to Hizbullah terrorists.

About 100 residents of the village surrounded the inspectors and attacked them. The inspectors called for reinforcements and fired several rounds of shots in the air. According to UNIFIL, the attack was a brazen violation of U.N. Security Council Decision 1701, which ended Israel’s 2006 war in Lebanon against Hizbullah. There was a previous attempt on Friday of disturbing the UNIFIL’s work. However, the Lebanese army intervened.
