(IsraelNN.com) Veteran American newscaster Walter Cronkite, who passed away Friday, will be remembered for asking then Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1977 whether he would visit Israel. The question was considered a non-starter, as Egypt and Israel did not share diplomatic relations.

Cronkite’s question made Middle East history when Sadat answered “Yes.” During the same broadcast, Cronkite informed then Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Sadat’s affirmative response. The Egyptian president visited Israel a few months’ later, paving the way for the Camp David accords, which led to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
