A softened version of the proposed “Nakba law” will be up for a Knesset committee vote on Sunday. The new version would prohibit any public body or group that receives public funds from negating Israel's right to exist as a Jewish or democratic state, expressing support for terrorism, or inciting to violence or racism.
The original “Nakba law,” proposed by Alex Miller of Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel Our Home), would have prohibited any public ceremony mourning the anniversary of the creation of the modern state of Israel as a “Nakba” (Arabic for "disaster"). Citizens would have been permitted to mourn in private, but those taking part in public “Nakba day” events would have faced prison time.
