Police fired shots in the air and used tear gas Thursday afternoon to disperse thousands of reformist demonstrators in Iran. It was the first time the protesters took to the streets since protests over the results of the June 12th presidential elections were put down.

The occasion for the demonstrations was the 10th anniversary of an attack on Tehran University students by security forces. At least one student was killed in the 1999 attacks, which centered around protests against the closing of a newspaper critical of the government. Others were beaten and jailed.
