The G8 group of industrialized nations called on Thursday for creation of a Palestinian Authority state within Israel's borders. The call was part of a closing statement for the group's meeting in Rome.

The body also called for the release of abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and the opening of crossings between Gaza and the rest of Israel to goods and pedestrians.
