Jewish National Front leader and Hevron resident Itamar Ben-Gvir said on Sunday that "if the State of Israel leaves Hevron and leaves us [the city's Jewish community] here, we will be forced to possess weapons and protect ourselves from those who would destroy us." Ben-Gvir was responding to remarks made by Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Saturday at a conference in the United States. In his remarks, Fayyad said Jews would be welcome in the PA state to be set up alongside Israel.
Ben-Gvir said Fayyad apparently wants to receive today's Jews the way the Arabs received the Jews of Hevron during the riots of 1929, when 67 Jews were murdered.
