Japanese diplomat Yukiya Amano was elected the next director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), diplomats said Thursday. The term of current dircetor Mohamed ElBaradei ends in the fall.
Amano defeated South Africa's Abdul Samad Minty by a vote of 23 to 11 with one abstention. A previous round of voting by the agency's 35-nation governing board in March did not produce the two-thirds majority needed for a win.
