Akko Mayor Shimon Lankry formed a volunteer tourist squad that tells visitors about the city's landmarks and popular sites as part of an effort to attract more tourists, Maariv reported Wednesday. The volunteers are attending courses about the city's historic sites, its heritage and tourist attractions. After training, the tourist squad will patrol areas in uniform and distribute maps and information pamphlets to tourists.
"Akko is undergoing a tourist revolution, and we are preparing to market the city in many ways, the tourist squad is just one of them," said Lankry. Each year, hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the city which was designated a World Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
