The Defense Ministry is in advanced negotiations to purchase F-35 fighter jets from the United States. Originally, U.S. officials emphasized that they wouldn't allow Israeli technological enhancements on their planes and were opposed to the Israel Air Force's being responsible for their maintenance. However, the U.S. has finally consented, allowing the deal to continue.
The Defense Ministry expressed its satisfaction that the U.S. has finally approved the installment of communications systems developed by Israel's defense system. They similarly stated that the officials will soon approve of the installment of electronic weaponry systems and maintenance of the planes in Israel. Defense Ministry officials told the Hebrew-language newspaper Ma'ariv that Israel will make a purchase order in the coming weeks for 25 fighter planes. Israel intends to eventually buy 75 F-35 airplanes from the United States. The price is still being negotiated.
