The Transportation Ministry has found serious failures in two near-misses at Ben-Gurion International Airport. In the first incident which occurred in late May, faulty readings by the airport's instrument landing system (ILS) brought two civilian aircraft to approach their landing at dangerously low altitudes. The pilots, whose vision were obstructed by heavy fog, attempted to land by the ILS system, approached the landing strips at dangerous angles. The planes were redirected to Cyprus, where they landed.
In the second incident, which occurred last week, an El Al airliner attempted to land on the wrong landing strip – while a Uzbekistan Airlines plane was landing at the same time.
