Archaeologists from Haifa University reported Sunday that they had discovered a large man-made cave in Israel. The cave, which is near Jericho, evidently served originally as a quarry and later as a monastery.
The main hall of the cavern is held up by 22 pillars which have Roman numerals, a Roman legion pennant and other symbols carved into them. Professor Adam Zertal, who headed the dig, dated it to the first century of the Common Era.
