(IsraelNN.com) The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced that it would soon begin the re-excavation of a late 3rd century mosaic that was discovered in Lod and then covered over for protection in 1996. The 1,700 year old well-preserved mosaic floor covers approximately 180 square meters and is composed of colored carpets that details mammals, birds, fish, flora and the sailing and merchant ships of the time.

This mosaic was discovered by archaeologist Miriam Avissar prior to the widening of Ha-Halutz Street by the municipality of Lod. At the end of the excavation it was covered to protect it from damage until funding was available to continue and turn the site into a public attraction. Support from the Leon Levy Foundation and Friends of the Israel Antiquities Authority Chairman Shelby White will enable the IAA to excavate, conserve and establish the Lod Mosaic Archaeological Center on the site.
