Support for Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) among Americans dropped during the first half of 2009, according to a new poll. The poll conducted for The Israel Project last week found that 49 percent of U.S. voters called themselves supporters of Israel, down from 57 percent in January. By comparison, support for Israel hit a seven-year low of 38 percent during the August 2005 disengagement from Gaza Strip.
Supporters of the PA dropped a percentage point to seven percent. A total of 31 percent were either undecided or non-supportive of either position. Those who identified as Republicans showed the strongest support for Israel (65 percent to 3 percent for the PA), followed by Independents (50 percent to 9 percent and Democrats (38 percent to 9 percent).
