Middle East envoy George Mitchell of the United States arrived in Lebanon on Friday for talks on the situation in the region. He is the most senior American official to arrive since last Sunday's elections, which were a setback for the pro-Syrian camp, led by Hizbullah.
First to meet the former senator was President Michel Suleiman. Mitchell was also slated to meet Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and Said Al-Hariri, leader of the victorious anti-Syrian camp, and update them on diplomatic progress between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
From Lebanon, Mitchell will travel to Syria.
