More than 20 Arab families have been given seven days to vacate homes built illegally on lots owned by Israelis in the northeast Jerusalem Arab village of Kafr Akab (near Kochav Yaakov), according to a report Tuesday morning by News One. The orders were posted on the eve of the Shavuot holiday.
Under the law, if the squatters don't leave voluntarily, the eviction will be carried out by security and repossession firms hired by the landowners. Complaints to the authorities did not result in action against the illegal construction.
Aryeh King, who heads the Yoshvei Hahar Ltd. company, which is operating on behalf of the owners, said the army did not display any interest in the case and the city of Jerusalem informed him that it could not enforce the law outside the Jerusalem security barrier, out of security concerns.
