Most Jewish Jerusalem schoolchildren attend hareidi-religious schools, according to a report released by the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies on the eve of Jerusalem Day. The statistics show that although there is a negative migration balance (-4900), it has been reduced in comparison with previous years (about -6,300 in 2006 and 2007). In 2008, 18,500 residents moved out of Jerusalem and 13,600 residents moved to Jerusalem. The Jewish school system has 150,100 students: While 59,900 are enrolled in the state-run secular and religious school systems (40%), 90,200 are enrolled in hareidi-religious schools (60%).

Over the past five years (2003/04-2008/09), the number of students enrolled in the state-run religious and secular school system has decreased by 6% and the number of students enrolled in hareidi-religious schools has increased by 11%.

In 2008, Jerusalem had an estimated population of 760,800 residents: 492,400 Jews (and other non-Arabs) and 268,400 Arabs. In percentages, Jerusalem was 65% Jewish and 35% Arab.
