U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller said on Tuesday that Israel should join the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Israel neither acknowledges or denies having nuclear weapons, but experts say Israel has a large nuclear arsenal.
Gottemoeller said, “Universal adherence to the non-proliferation treaty itself, including by India, Israel, Pakistan and North Korea … remains a fundamental objectivng of the United States.” Afterwards, she refused to say whether the U.S. would pressure Israel to join the treaty.
