The government's hydrological service announced on Tuesday that the level of the Dead Sea remained stable in April. The water level was measured at 422.22 meters (1,385 feet) below sea level, 1.11 meters lower than in April 2008.

The sea's level is related to the fresh water it gets from the River Jordan, which is fed in turn by Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) and other sources in northern Israel and beyond. The dropping of the water level is an international ecological concern. A number of solutions have been proposed, including the pumping of salt water from the Red Sea.
