Top UN Official: Comprehensive Mideast Agreement Urgent

A top UN official told the Security Council at its New York headquarters on Monday that a comprehensive Middle East agreement is urgently needed. “For the sake of the people of the region, there must be peace and not simply further process,” B. Lynn Pascoe, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, said in his monthly briefing to its 15-member body.

He said that his calls for a two-state solution have been hampered by the absence of a ceasefire in Gaza, lack of conciliation between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, and Israel’s continuation of construction of housing units within Judea and Samaria.
