The word “shylock,” a term used to characterize Jews as mean moneylenders, is on the way to be stricken from legislation in Florida. The name comes from the Shakespeare play "The Merchant of Venice". The state senate has unanimously passed a law that erases the word “shylocking” from laws against exploiting borrowers.
Democratic Senator Eleanor Sobel introduced the bill to fix “the mistake that has been left by history.” The state’s house of representatives is expected to pass a similar bill.
