Russian Jews Fear Exile of Rabbi a Sign of the Times

Russian Jewry have taken the  rare step of openly criticizing government officials following the deportation of Chabad rabbi Yisrael Silberstein, his wife and young son. Jewish leaders said that the exile might be a signal of future attempts to prevent the opening of new synagogues.

Rabbi Silberstein served the 6,000-member Jewish community of Vladivostok, a Pacific Ocean coastal city where the rate of intermarriage is nearly 95 percent. A court ordered his exile after discovering that the rabbi had not checked the appropriate box on a visa application.
