Rabbis close to hareidi-religious leader Rabbi Elyashiv said Friday that reports regarding the rabbi's alleged statement on civil marriage were mistaken. Rabbi Elyashiv did not rule out the possibility of civil marriage between non-Jews, they said.
The rabbis suggested that rumors that Rabbi Elyashiv's opposition to civil marriage extends to any possible form of civil marriage were started by Kadima supporters who hoped to torpedo the chances of a Likud-lead coalition. Likud is hoping to join with Yisrael Beiteinu, which supports civil marriage.
